Sugarless Christmas Treats

Thanksgiving and Hanukkah are over and Christmas is just around the corner. Once the turkey and pumpkin pie have been finished off, we turn our attention to holiday shopping, putting up the tree, and preparing for a whole variety of holiday festivities.

This is also a time that we tend to go overboard on sweet treats – all those holiday dinners accompanied by sweet pies; chocolate and sweet treats for the kids at Christmas; even just sugar and coffee to keep us going between planning parties, holiday shopping, work and more! This means more sugar in your diet, leading to possible tooth decay and weight gain – definitely something that everyone wants to avoid!

At Dr. John’s we offer a variety of xylitol products that allow you and your family to enjoy your favorite sweet treats this Christmas – and throughout the year – without sugar. Our xylitol products contain no sugar, and many are Kosher, Gluten Free, or free of artificial flavors – meaning that you’ll be able to find something to suit everyone on your list. Here are some of our favorite treats for the Christmas season.

Chocolates are an incredibly popular gift – making the perfect sweet stocking stuffer, or gift for the office. Our line of DecaDENTS chocolates includes Sea Salt caramel wrapped in dark chocolate, crunchy English-style toffee, caramel pecan turtles and more – all without sugar, and offering the great taste and oral health benefits of xylitol.

Every group has a few picky members, and it seems impossible to please everyone. Dr. John’s offers a variety of assorted sugar free candy choices, making it possible to please every guest! Our popular Simply Xylitol Assorted Sampler offers lollipops, hard candies, caramels and more, so that everyone will find something that they love. Another favorite for the holidays is our Tropical Mix Lollipops, offering refreshing fruit flavors that will remind you of summertime – even as it’s snowing outside!

Every holiday party features pastries, pies and other sweet treats. At Dr. John’s, we offer a substitute for sugar that not only tastes great, but substitutes for sugar at a 1:1 ratio and works well in many
recipes. Our Simply Xylitol sweetener is made from 100% USA Birch Xylitol and has a low glycemic index with only 15 calories per tablespoon, and promotes positive oral health. It’s never been easier to cut sugar from your diet and offer healthier cakes, pies and more to your guests with health concerns. Visit our blog for delicious xylitol recipes.

This holiday, load up on presents and time with friends and family – not excessive sugar. Dr. John’s makes it easy to enjoy sweet treats while cutting sugar and improving oral health!

Oral Health More Important Than Ever!

Everyone knows that proper oral and dental health is important – a beautiful smile is desiredby everyone, and nobody wants to experience the pain  and incur the expense of filling cavities and root canals. But new research shows that maintaining good oral health affects more than just your pearly whites.

Recent research from Anwar Merchant at the University of South Carolina shows indicators that oral health may have a correlation with heart health. Merchant’s research tested children with diabetes between 10 and 12 years old. His research showed that many of the children who had the markers of poor oral health – an increased number of microorganisms which may cause periodontal disease – also showed early risk factors for heart disease such as high blood pressure.

Research has already shown that individuals with diabetes are more prone to cardiovascular disease. Diabetes and poor oral health also show some correlation, as those with diabetes have shown an increased prevalence of gum disease according to the ADA. Research suggests that those with diabetes are at an increased risk for gum disease due to lack of abilities in fighting bacterial infection – but also, those with serious gum disease may have the potential to affect blood glucose control and heighten their risk for diabetes. This makes it even more important to maintain good oral health!

At Dr. John’s, we offer a variety of products that are specifically formulated to promote positive oral health. Our line of xylitol products features a variety of candies, mints and other products which contain efficacious  amounts of xylitol.. All of our products are also sugar free, making them a good choice for diabetics under the supervision of a physician.

Keeping your teeth and gums healthy is important – and new research shows that your oral health has the ability to affect other areas of your health. Dr. John’s Simply Xylitol Plan offers individuals a plan for maximizing the potential oral health benefits of xylitol.  In addition to using xylitol products, Dr. John recommends that you brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily and visit the dentist regularly.

Xylitol Apple Fritters

Katie is in the kitchen again and has sent us another xylitol recipe!

This time, Katie created a tasty apple fritter, sweetened with xylitol.

She also included instructions for an optional glaze. Note that the glaze is made from powdered sugar, so you can include it or omit it, the choice is yours.

Fritter:

1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup Dr. John's Xylitol granules
1/3 cup milk
1 egg
1 cup chopped apple
Canola oil (for frying)

Glaze:
2 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons milk or water

Directions:

Combine flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon and xylitol. Stir in milk and egg until just combined. Fold in apple. Pour oil into saucepan so that it is approximately 1 1/2 inches deep. Heat oil on high. Oil is ready when dough floats to top. Carefully add dough to oil in heaping teaspoons.  Cook until brown, about 2 minutes, then flip. Cook another 1-2 minutes, until both sides are browned. Transfer briefly to paper towels to absorb excess oil, then transfer to cooling rack.

Optional:  Make glaze by stirring milk and powdered sugar together in a small bowl. Drizzle over apple fritters. Best served warm.

A Sugar Free Candy Cane Alternative

Nothing says Christmas quite like a candy cane – those iconic red and white swirls, unique shape, and pleasing peppermint flavor. This Christmastime treat is incredibly popular – about 1.76 billion candy canes are produced worldwide each year, and in December you’ll find candy canes in everything from coffee drinks to ice cream.

One of Christmas’ most popular treats got its start in 1672. It has been said that a choirmaster in the Cologne Cathedral in Germany sought a sweet treat as a distraction for the noisy children in his church. The cane shape was dictated by the choirmaster to remind the children of the shepherds who visited Bethlehem. The first record of candy canes being hung on Christmas trees dates back to 1882, and the earliest commercial patent for candy canes goes back to the 1920s.

Candy canes are full of flavor – but they’re full of sugar, too. For those concerned about sugar intake, such as children with sugar sensitivities or diabetics, Dr. John’s offers xylitol lollipops with a refreshing mint flavor – our Simply Xylitol Peppermint Lollipops!

These delicious oval-shaped lollipops offer Candy Cane taste that will satisfy your craving for a minty treat. These long-lasting sugar free suckers are Kosher, gluten free, free of artificial sweeteners and are diabetic friendly. Each lollipop offers 1 gram of xylitol, which has been shown to help promote positive oral health. It’s the perfect replacement for sugary candy canes, or even sugar-freecandy canes – unlike other sugar free products, our candy has no aftertaste. Just cool, minty flavor!

At Dr. John’s, we specialize in helping people enjoy their favorite treats, without sugar. If you’re looking for a delicious candy cane alternative, this xylitol candy is your best bet!
